What is a Weather-Resistant Ball Valve?
Weather-Resistant Ball Valves

A weather- (or water-) resistant ball valve is a shut-off or flow-control valve built to operate reliably outdoors, where rain, wash-down hoses, wind-driven dust, UV radiation and sudden temperature swings may quickly corrode or or damage ordinary valves.

In a true weather-resistant design, the actuator, stem-seal area and electrical components are enclosed in a rugged housing that blocks intrusive moisture and contaminants while allowing trouble-free cycling. Here’s a closer look at what sets these valves apart:

  • Sealed actuator enclosures: Some electric actuators feature a NEMA 4 rating which indicates that the actuator is sealed to protect against rain and high pressure water jets and washdowns. The more robust NEMA 4X rating adds corrosion protection for salt, chemicals and humidity. Comparable international designations include IP65–IP67.
  • Outdoor-tolerant materials: Valve bodies are typically 316 stainless steel, brass or engineered plastics; seats and seals use PTFE, Viton® or EPDM for chemical and temperature resilience.
  • Wide ambient temperature ranges: Most ball valves are well suited to a wide range of temperatures, however, it is always best to check with the manufacturer to confirm the temperature rating of the specific valve. Extreme applications may require special features such as a pressure relief vent. For automated ball valve assemblies the actuator will typically be the limiting factor when it comes to ambient temperature ratings.
  • Freeze-mitigation options: Pressure-relief vents, stem weep holes, insulation jackets or heat tracing help prevent ice-related damage in sub-zero climates.
  • Ingress-protected connectors and cables: Glanded cable entries, molded plugs and stainless hardware stop wicking and galvanic corrosion.

Weather-Resistant Ball Valve Applications

These valves are suited for a variety of industries and use cases, including:

  • Food and beverage Clean-in-Place / Wash-in-Place (CIP/WIP) lines – high-pressure wash-downs
  • Water and wastewater lift stations – humidity, splash, corrosive spray
  • Agriculture and irrigation manifolds – dust, UV, daily temperature swings
  • Marine and offshore skids – salt spray, vibration, corrosion
  • HVAC rooftop service – freeze/thaw cycles, wind-driven rain
Features of Our Weather- & Water-Resistant Ball Valves

When you specify a Gemini weather- or water-resistant assembly, you’re selecting a valve package purpose-built for harsh, unpredictable environments. Every electric model leaves our plant with a NEMA 4X enclosure that protects from hose-down spray, driving rain and salt-laden air. Inside, precision-machined components and Belleville-spring loaded stem seals preserve tight shut-off after hundreds of thousands of cycles in most applications. No field adjustments required.

  • NEMA 4X watertight, corrosion-resistant enclosure (standard on every Gemini electric weather resistant ball valve)
  • Ambient temperature ranges
    • Electric: 40°F–150°F
    • Pneumatic: –20°F–350°F
  • Body materials: 316 stainless steel or Brass
  • Valve sizes: ¼″–2″, full- or reduced-port options
  • Pressure class: Up to 1,000 psi CWP for robust service-line and process applications
  • Seat & seal options: PTFE, Viton® or EPDM; pressure-relief vents available for freeze-mitigation
  • Cycle life: Hundreds of thousands of cycles in most applications.
  • Lead times: Our standard product lines ship from stock within 2 business days. (custom orders in as little as two weeks)

Freeze-Tolerant Note: Pressure relief vent options are available for applications with extreme low temperatures or significant temperature changes. Reach out to us for more details.
